On Tuesday morning around 5:30am, the City of Destin unveiled the new 3-way stop signs at the intersection of Main Street and Kelly Street.
This comes after 10-year-old Kohltan Ward was struck by a vehicle back in October 2020 at the same intersection. Kohltan later died from his injuries.
In response to accident, Destin City Council-member Prebble Ramswell got the discussion of a 3-way stop sign added to the council agenda. City staff then took initial steps to address the safety concerns beginning with flashing beacons installed at the crosswalk.
Over the last several weeks, a traffic message board was placed near the intersection to alert motorists of the new traffic control devices being installed. According to the city, this message board will be out there for a few more days as drivers get used to the new stop.
