AQUA ALERT: Deputies, Coast Guard search for missing diver off Destin coast

A 31-year-old diver went missing 12 miles offshore and 17 miles southwest of Destin Pass on Sept. 22. Authorities and volunteers are coordinating search efforts for Jeremy Carmical, last seen around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities are searching for a missing diver who disappeared off the coast of Destin, Florida, on Sunday afternoon.

  • Jeremy Carmical, 31, was last seen around 1 p.m. on September 22, 2024, approximately 12 miles offshore and 17 miles southwest of the Destin Pass. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office issued an Aqua Alert with Carmical’s last known coordinates: 30°11.925N 086°46.395W.

Carmical is described as a white male, 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 175 pounds. He was wearing a camo wetsuit and had a neon orange dive tank when he went missing.

  • The United Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office are involved in the search efforts. They urge anyone who spots the missing diver to contact them immediately.

A call for volunteers with offshore-capable boats was issued on Sunday night to assist in the search and rescue operation. Volunteers met at Harborwalk Marina in Destin at 6:45 a.m. Monday morning. The search team will be monitoring VHF channels 10 and 16 for communication.

Those willing to help in the search are encouraged to contact the United Cajun Navy (UCN) coordinators Joey Sauvageu at 850-420-5502 or Kevin LaFond at 251-419-4890.

Authorities emphasize that the missing diver will be in the water, not on a vessel. The search area is centered around the coordinates where Carmical was last seen.

    1. Hi Missy. I am Jeremy’s aunt and as of 3:23 PM CST he still has not been found. Please lift my sister and his brothers up in prayers as they are very much so needed!!!

      1. Thank you Christy, please know there are many prayer warriors, lifting up, not only family and friends but the brave and precious searchers. God has his arms wrapped totally around Jeremy right now. I’m in Gainesville, but could be there in three hours to help in any way possible.

      2. Praying for Jeremy and you guys. He was a good part of our Bible study and we had planned to dive together also. He’s a good dude.

  2. Sending prayers and all of our love to Jeremy and his Mom and brothers. I am the Mom of an avid diver (also 31 years old) and my heart is just sick with worry about Jeremy.
    Love from St. Petersburg,

  3. We are praying for Jeremy. Trying to stay hopeful! Our heart goes out to his mother and brother for the emotional trials they are going through and have had to go through. We never got a chance to meet them but Jeremy is a great friend and military counterpart to my husband and by association we got to have him in our family as well. -The Balzers
