All charges against former Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy Dylan Gentry have been dismissed following the revelation of exonerating video evidence, according to a statement released Tuesday by his attorney, Jay Patel.
- Gentry, 25, was arrested by the Fort Walton Beach Police Department in July for alleged traffic-related misdemeanors and a felony count of tampering with evidence. The arrest led to his immediate termination from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, where he had served for three years, according to Patel.
The charges stemmed from accusations that Gentry was racing on the highway, driving recklessly, and tampering with evidence while operating a motorcycle. However, video footage from a camera on Gentry’s motorcycle has now contradicted these claims, according to Patel.
“The video evidence clearly shows that Mr. Gentry was operating his motorcycle in a lawful manner,” Patel said in the press release. “The footage reveals that the claims leading to his arrest are wholly unsupported by the facts.”
Patel said that the “evidence not only highlights Mr. Gentry’s adherence to the law but also underscores the importance of thorough and accurate investigations before legal action is taken.”
“We are grateful for the swift dismissal of these charges and the opportunity to clear Dylan Gentry’s name,” added Patel. “The video evidence has been instrumental in demonstrating his innocence. However, because the Fort Walton Beach Police Officer made a felony arrest, the arrest triggered an immediate termination of Mr. Gentry’s employment with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, pursuant to their policy. It is our hope that both agencies learn from this unfortunate incident.”
Patel concluded by stating that Gentry is relieved the matter has been resolved and is looking forward to continuing his service to the community.
