After defeating Escambia 4-2 on the road Tuesday night, Choctaw baseball completed the sweep with a 7-1 victory at home Thursday.
- “A lot of credit to the kids. They played really hard, they’re getting after it. It’s fun to watch,” Choctaw Head Coach David Weber said.
But things didn’t start out well for the Indians. After two hits and a walk off Choctaw pitcher Trevor Camden, Clayton Sanders stole home on a wild pitch to give Escambia a 1-0 lead.
Gators pitcher Cohen Rush did a nice job limiting Choctaw’s bats — until the fourth. John Brown and Maddox Gentry each singled, and then Carter Marracco ripped an RBI double that scored them both to give the Indians a 2-1 lead.
From there, the floodgates opened.
In the fifth, Choctaw padded its lead. Seth Young and Camden were walked, and Jacob Mickey scored on a fielder’s choice by Jordan Figueroa. Isaiah Rohn singled, Brown was walked, and an Escambia error allowed Figueroa to score, making it 4-1. A Jack Harrell RBI single scored Brown to push the lead to 5-1, and Marracco added another RBI single to score Gentry and make it 6-1.
Choctaw tacked on one more run before Camden and the defense closed things out, with Camden going the distance in a complete-game effort.
- “We’ve got to keep fighting, which our guys always do,” Weber said. “We continue to put the ball in play, and good things start to happen. It’s great to see.”
Choctaw (14-4) is currently listed as the No. 1 seed in 4A District 1. The Indians will host Ohio County (Hartford, Kentucky) in a non-conference matchup Monday at 6 p.m.
Escambia (13-8) will travel to play Pensacola Catholic on Tuesday.
