Thanks to the rapid development of Tropical Depression 16 (who will be known as Nate) in the Southwestern Caribbean off the coast of Nicaragua, the Destin Seafood Festival has been cancelled.
Taking to their Facebook page to give the sad news, the event said this:
The 2017 Destin Seafood Festival has been canceled indefinitely. ALL of us at the festival are sick to our stomach that this is happening. Due to the projected path, landfall, and intensity we deem it to be a potentially unsafe environment. All of our vendors, patrons, and volunteer’s safety is our number one priority. Because of the projected path property owners are also implementing preparations to secure their properties which hinders our ability operate. We thank everyone for their understanding.
A few hours later, the festival posted another update:
Our top priority is the safety of our guests, vendors, sponsors and property hosts. We will not jeopardize any of the above. As heartbreaking as it is we have canceled the event this year; unfortunately. We are sick over it. We pray the weather subsides and all the vendors and guests impacted will still enjoy Destin, as it is truly Paradise. We are looking forward to the 40th Anniversary next year! We will refund all VIP passes. T-shirt’s and posters will be available on the website and pending confirmation the Destin Community Center.
According to WeatherUnderground, satellite imagery on Wednesday afternoon showed that the storm was in the early stages of organization, with a modest area of heavy thunderstorms and a couple of prominent low-level spiral bands.
