Captain Nevin Hauger of Emerald Coast Scuba in Destin, FL spotted this distressed turtle on the surface just a few miles offshore in Destin.

After easing in for a closer look, the crew noticed that the turtle was caught on a “wad of debris.”

According to Emerald Coast Scuba, Instructor Jason Dodd and mate Danny quickly jumped in to help. Within minutes the pair had removed all of the debris from the turtle and sent him on his way.

“We are very proud to help this turtle today, but we want to use this opportunity to show the significance of environmental conservation,” the company wrote in a Facebook post. “If the right steps are taken on the surface, this stuff never happens below. We all love seeing turtles, but definitely not like this!!”
