Shalimar, Florida – The NAACP, Okaloosa County Branch, in partnership with The Town of Shalimar, the Shalimar Library, the Okaloosa County America 250 Commission, local leaders and various community organizations, is proud to announce a commemorative event honoring Augustus “Gus” Tart, a formerly enslaved, early pioneer of Northwest Florida. The dedication ceremony will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Air Force Armament Museum.
The event will begin with a prelude of music from 12:30 to 1:00 PM, setting a reflective and celebratory tone. The official program will commence at 1:00 PM with a call to order by Mr. Lewis Jennings, 1st Vice President of the NAACP, Okaloosa County Branch.

A highlight of the ceremony will be historical presentations recounting the story of Augustus Tart as told by significant local figures representing the Brooks family, the Shalimar Library and the NAACP Special Research Committee.

A special presentation, led by Mayor Franks, will take place further commemorating the legacy of Augustus Tart. The ceremony will conclude with closing remarks from Sabu Williams, President, NAACP Okaloosa County Branch. This event is open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend to honor the enduring contributions of Augustus “Gus” Tart, a local pioneer who helped shape the history of Okaloosa County and Northwest Florida.
