FDOT crews to treat bridges, overpasses ahead of winter storm in Northwest Florida

State transportation crews will begin applying anti-icing treatments to bridges and overpasses Monday afternoon as Northwest Florida prepares for rare winter precipitation.
FDOT

The Florida Department of Transportation announced crews will start winter weather operations at 2 p.m. Monday, deploying tankers and bridge deck sprayers across the region.

  • “Bridges are known to ice over before roadways do,” FDOT officials said. The anti-icing products aim to prevent ice from bonding to pavement and speed up melting time.

FDOT will work with state and local law enforcement to evaluate potential road closures if icy conditions make roadways unsafe. The agency is also coordinating with neighboring states to maintain regional transportation networks.

Officials encourage drivers to monitor road conditions through Florida’s 511 Traveler Information System, available online at FL511.com or via mobile app. The system provides 24/7 updates on traffic conditions, road and bridge closures, and emergency alerts.

The winter weather operations come as forecasters predict up to 4 inches of snow could fall in parts of Okaloosa County on Tuesday, with freezing conditions expected to persist through Wednesday.
