A freeze warning has been issued from midnight tonight to 7 a.m. Wednesday for parts northwest Florida, according to a statement from Okaloosa County Public Safety Director Patrick Maddox.
- Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 degrees are expected, which could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor plumbing could also be damaged.
Maddox advised area residents to take precautions to protect plants from the impending cold temperatures. Recommendations include wrapping outdoor water pipes, allowing them to slowly drip or draining in-ground sprinkler systems and covering any above-ground pipes.
Counties expected to be affected by the warning include Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Escambia and Walton counties in Florida as well as neighboring counties across the southeastern corner of Alabama and Mississippi.
Residents are advised to protect people, pets and plants during the duration of the freeze event.
- Temperatures are forecast to climb back above freezing by Wednesday afternoon across the region.
