Flip-Flop Floatilla is a Northwest Florida Volunteer Emergency Response Team that was started in 2017 in response to Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Now the members of the team are heading to help victims in smaller communities who will/have been impacted by the Florence. Talking with the Walton Sun, leader Christian Oakes said that “too often, those communities are bypassed by larger rescue and recovery efforts.”
Not only is Flip Flop Floatilla headed to perform search and rescue, but they are also arriving with supplies and donations. As the team makes their way to the Carolinas and part of Virgina, they ask for your prayers. To read more on the efforts by Flip Flop Floatilla, click here.
Destin keeps option to buy Gulf Power utility system
With their 30-year franchise agreement with Gulf Power set to expire on September 21st, the Destin City Council agreed to preserves the city’s right to purchase Gulf Power’s electric plant and other property within the city. According to The Destin Log, the 5-1 vote happened on Thursday with Councilman Parker Destin saying, “nobody has committed to buying the (electric) system,” but that the city’s right to do so now is preserved “indefinitely.” Based on a 2017 estimate, it would cost to City of Destin $71 million (likely higher) to buy the utility system. Red tide reported
“Very low” quantities of red tide have been reported in Okaloosa and Walton County. According to the Northwest Florida Daily News, officials in both counties reported not seeing much of a presence but Walton County beach safety personnel have noticed the presence of red tide in the air. South Walton Fire District Beach Director David Vaughan suspects the low amount of red tide is likely “churn” from the last tropical storm. To read more on the reports of red tide, click here.
