AccuWeather.com is just now realizing we have “extreme” mosquitos

The Northwest Florida Daily News ran an article about AccuWeather’s claim of “extreme” mosquito activity for next 2 weeks. The “extreme” rating is based on temperature (I think we can all agree it’s been hot) and the forecast ranks the probability of mosquito activity on a five-step scale from “low” to “extreme.”

But this is Florida. WE👏HAVE👏MOSQUITOS👏. And they are extreme!

Luckily, our local authorities aren’t buying it but you can read more on this report right here.

Possible projects from the proposed half-cent sales tax

On November 6th, voters will be asked to approve the county’s 10-year, local option half-cent sales tax referendum, according to the Northwest Florida Daily News. While this list is not final and no costs have been associated with each of these items, possible projects funded by the sales tax revenue could be:

  • Paving of at least two dirt roads in the north end of Okaloosa County
  • 18 road projects
  • 9 stormwater projects
  • Bridge replacement
  • School safety upgrades
  • Replacing old, obsolete communications systems
  • Buying hazmat and bomb squad equipment
  • New ambulances

If approved, the tax is expected to generate an estimated $18 million annually. To read more in-depth coverage, click here.

Convention Center looking to add an Amphitheater

FINALLY! Someone is wanting to put more use to the massive 35,000-square-foot space that stands between the north side of the Emerald Coast Convention Center on Okaloosa Island and Marler Park. And that person is Jennifer Adams, the director of the Okaloosa County Tourist Development Department.

According to The Destin Log, the paved area is known as Bayview Plaza and has mainly been used for RV parking, but Adams would like to see an amphitheater added where they could host festivals and other events, concerts and food trucks. To more on this report, click here.
