Yesterday morning, Fort Walton Beach City Manager Michael Beedie stopped by Get The Coast to chat with Whitney about the future of The Landing in Downtown FWB.
As many of you know, the city has been working on an overall Master Plan for Downtown in preparation for what Downtown will be when the new bridge is built. Part of that Master Plan includes The Landing.
As Whitney pointed out in the interview, there are a ton of events and activities that take place at The Landing. From concerts to movies to the food & wine fest and farmers’ markets.
In an effort to open up the layout of The Landing more, certain improvements need to be made. One of those improvements is the VentureHive building (the old Science Center). The VentureHive building has been empty since last September and the City has put out an RFP to get someone to take over the building but didn’t receive any viable options within the RFP timeframe. Now, in order to open up The Landing, that building will be demolished.
Along with the VentureHive building, the public bathrooms with also be demolished in order to build new bathrooms on either side of The Landing.
The initial improvements will start South toward the water with rebuilding the boardwalk and the making their way inland to the VentureHive building.
Some of the improvements we can expect to see include a new stage with a more outdoor amphitheater feel, splash-pad, new tables, new bathroom, and an updated entrance to the park.
Improvements are set to begin in early 2019 and the City hopes to have them complete by the end of that same year.

“We will rebuild Tyndall Air Force Base.”
Those words were spoken by Vice President Mike Pence and as of Saturday, 1,200 people were working at Tyndall, according to the Northwest Florida Daily News. But even though the promise to rebuild is there, efforts to re-establish Tyndall will rely heavily on area Air Force installations like Hurlburt and Eglin. Click here to read more.
