Rip Currents: What To Do?

Rip currents are quite common on the beaches of Northwest Florida. Lifeguards in the area have reported hundreds of rescues since Memorial Day. Rip currents are when a column of water (pictured above) is rushing out from the beach while the surf around it keeps rushing in. Since rip currents are hard to spot to the untrained eye, the first thing to do when you get to the beach is to look out for yellow and red flags. Lifeguards will fly these colors when rip currents may be present. If you think you are caught in one DO NOT PANIC, calmly swim parallel to the shore and wave for a lifeguard. Owners Joey Luna, left, and Cory Hassett plan to open The Locals Public House Eatery on July 2nd. (Photo: DAILYNEWS)

This new addition will overlook the Emerald Coast Marine and the food will be as fresh as it gets! The menu will feature lots of smoked items and will shy away from “typical seafood menus”. Cory Hassett is the former head chef of the Crab Shack in Fort Walton Beach and is now the head chef at his own restaurant. Hassett and Luna said what they’re looking forward to most about being restaurant owners is doing what they do best — running the restaurant. “We’re going to be catering to our locals and our military,” Luna said. “Almost all of our vendors are going to be local. All of our beer is going to be local, mom-and-pop type breweries.” They are trying to create high-end plates on a locals budget. You can read the full story here.

These beautiful Porpita Porpita, better known as the Blue Button Jellyfish are found on the beaches of 30A regularly. They are more similar to a Portuguese Man O’ War than a Jellyfish. They do not swim, they float and move with currents, winds and tides. They usually wash ashore during the summer months. They are painless most of the time but can cause irritation of the skin, so better to use your eyes than your hands. You can read 7 Astounding Facts about the Blue Button Jellyfish here.
