Niceville wants to expand Redwood Avenue project to include sidewalk from Valparaiso Blvd to 11th Street

The Okaloosa Board of County Commissioners will discuss a proposed change order submitted for the current Redwood Avenue Improvement project in Niceville.

  • This is for the expansion of the project to include a sidewalk segment between Valparaiso Blvd. and 11th Street.
  • It requires an additional funding of $133,347.

The original contract was approved in November of last year to improve conditions along Redwood Avenue by adding sidewalk and other improvements from John Sims Parkway (Hwy. 20) to Valparaiso Blvd.

  • The Plan: 5 foot sidewalk improvements will tie into the existing facilities at the signalized intersection on SR 20 and extend south to Valparaiso Blvd., almost a mile south. 
  • Other improvements include stormwater structures, driveway and intersection modifications, parallel parking spaces, retaining wall, signage and handrails.

During the construction, which is substantially ahead of schedule, the City of Niceville asked the county to consider expanding the project to extend the new sidewalk to 11th Street, where it would connect with sidewalk the City has previously installed.

In a letter to the county, Niceville City Manager Lannie Corbin wrote that there would be approximately 1,800 feet with no sidewalk along the road. Despite not being within the city limits, Corbin said that Niceville would participate financially to add a sidewalk.

  • The City is proposing to provide the additional design and fund 50% of the improvements.

Based on Niceville’s participation, no additional Surtax funding will be required for this extension.

The Board of County Commissioners will vote on this project on Tuesday, February 14th, 2022.
