45 inmates baptized during voluntary service at Okaloosa County Jail

Forty-five men and women housed at the Okaloosa County Jail in Crestview participated in a voluntary baptism service Monday led by two local church pastors.

Forty-five inmates at the Okaloosa County Jail in Crestview were baptized Monday during a voluntary service that corrections officials said provides opportunities for personal growth and rehabilitation.

  • Pastor Jonathan King of First Apostolic Church and Pastor Grady O’Neal of Calvary United Crestview led the Aug. 17 service, along with volunteers from both churches.

Both men and women participated. The service was voluntary, the county said, and was designed to provide an opportunity for reflection, renewal and hope.

Corrections Chief John Moring said the department’s role goes beyond running a secure facility.

“Our responsibility extends beyond maintaining a safe and secure facility. We also want to provide opportunities that support positive change and rehabilitation,” Moring said. “Restoring voluntary baptism services allows individuals to participate in an important part of their personal faith journey.”

The county said the service is part of a broader effort to support rehabilitation while respecting the individual beliefs and choices of those in its care.

Moring said the department welcomes people of all faiths and those who do not practice one.

“We respect people of all faiths, as well as those who do not practice a faith,” he said. “For those who choose to participate, baptism can be a meaningful step toward personal growth, renewed commitment, and making positive choices as they prepare to return to the community.”
