The incident occurred on US Highway 90 and Lancelot Road, shutting down the highway in both directions as investigators work the scene.

A Walton County sheriff’s deputy is fighting for their life and a suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting Wednesday at a Dollar General store in Mossy Head.

  • Sheriff Michael Adkinson confirmed the shooting took place on US Highway 90 at Lancelot Road, where the Dollar General is located.

“[The] suspect is now deceased and our deputy is facing life threatening injuries,” Adkinson said in a statement.

Authorities have closed US Highway 90 in both directions—eastbound and westbound—while they investigate. Officials expect the closure to last for an extended period.

  • The sheriff’s office plans to provide more details during a press conference later tonight.

“That’s all I’m prepared to release at this time,” Adkinson said.
