In what could be the single most important piece of pro-citizen oversight legislation to pass in Destin’s history, development of large scale projects could soon be in the hands of residents at the ballot box.

This week, Destin City Councilman (and County Commissioner Candidate) Parker Destin made a motion cap building height restrictions to 6 stories. If a developer wishes to exceed 6 stories, an application would need to be submitted and the voting public would then decide on a ballot whether or not they choose to vote yes or no on the development.

The development would need 60% of the yes votes in order to move forward.

It was a unanimous decision from the council and has the potential to stop special interest groups from controlling development and growth within the city of Destin.
