History is all that can be said about the Lady Sharks’ win over Maclay Thursday afternoon, a 25-18, 25-17, 21-25, 21-25, 15-13 victory that gave Destin the District 1-2A title.

It is the first district championship in program history and only the second in the history of Destin High School, joining the school’s girls basketball program.

“Maclay, they put on a heck of a fight. That’s a great school, great competition. We have trust and grit, and these girls pulled through, and I can’t say how proud of them I am,” Head Coach Dominic Fasula said.

To put it bluntly, Destin opened with all the momentum in the world. A string of Lady Marauders errors fueled a 5-0 Destin run to open the first set.

Maclay began to claw back after an Ivy Reinhart kill sparked a run, but Angel Wilson quickly responded with a block to stop the bleeding. A kill and a block from Kenzi Prosser made it 8-4 Destin.

Prosser had another kill, but a Kate Hartmann kill sparked a 3-0 Lady Marauders run, only for Prosser to stop the bleeding with another kill. Maclay tied it at 10, but an Isabella Volpe kill sparked a 3-0 Destin run. Maclay quickly tied it again, but the Lady Sharks pulled away down the stretch to take the first set 25-18 in what was a wire-to-wire set.

  • Maclay struck first in the second set, but Destin quickly pounced with a 5-0 run. The Lady Marauders answered with an 8-0 run of their own to take back momentum and a 9-5 lead.

Victoria Silva stopped the bleeding with a kill that sparked a 4-0 Destin run to tie it, though an Emerson Brooks block gave Maclay back the lead. The Lady Sharks retook the lead off a Kaylee Kaiser block, and despite an Esther Izuegbu block and another Maclay point, Destin regrouped and outscored Maclay 7-2 to win the second set 25-17.

It seemed then that Destin was on its way to a convincing statement sweep, but Maclay responded with fury and quickly seized momentum.

The Lady Marauders opened the third set on a 4-0 run, and though Destin tied it, Maclay remained in control throughout to win 25-21. In the fourth set, Maclay again took control early and fended off a late Destin rally to win 25-21 and force a fifth set.

The Lady Sharks grabbed early momentum in the fifth set with kills from Silva and Prosser, but Maclay quickly took the lead, and the set proved to be a battle. Maclay soon led 12-8 and came three points away from a district championship.

That’s when Volpe stepped up for the Lady Sharks, delivering two straight kills to spark a 5-0 Destin run that included Silva’s tying block and ended with Volpe finishing it off. Maclay added another kill, but Destin scored the next two points to finish it off 15-13 and punch its ticket to the playoffs.

“Isabella, she’s got a heavy hand. She came, she had to battle, she stayed with it, she kept pushing, and she was a big reason of why we won today,” Fasula said.

“I’m really proud of myself. I’m just happy it could all be put to use when it matters,” Volpe said.

“She’s freaking crazy. MVP,” Prosser added.

Destin currently sits as the No. 6 seed and must now wait to see whether it will get a home playoff game.

“Whoever comes in, don’t underestimate us. We’re here to play,” Fasula said.

“We’re excited to see who we play,” Prosser added.

“It’ll be absolutely crazy if Destin wins their first district and state at the same time,” Volpe said.
