A Fort Walton Beach police officer, who is also a military veteran, helped persuade an armed veteran experiencing a mental health crisis to surrender peacefully, according to the Fort Walton Beach Police Department.
- The department said on Wednesday, Oct. 14, that officers responded to 29 Miracle Strip Parkway SW after receiving reports of a person sitting in his vehicle with a rifle and wearing body armor.
When officers arrived, they encountered a man wearing tactical equipment and body armor who had an AR-15-style rifle, multiple handguns and several hundred rounds of ammunition, according to the release.
During negotiations, the man made several statements indicating emotional distress and potential suicidal intentions, police said.
An officer at the scene who is also a veteran established a personal connection with the man through their shared military background, according to the department. Using patience and de-escalation techniques, the officer persuaded the man to surrender peacefully. No one was injured.
Police said the man was then assisted in obtaining a mental health evaluation and access to appropriate resources.
The release did not identify the man or the officer.
The department said the incident highlights the importance of crisis intervention training, effective communication and its officers’ dedication to preserving life.
“The Fort Walton Beach Police Department remains committed to protecting the community while ensuring individuals experiencing mental health crises are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect,” the department said in the release.
