Ever wonder what a typical day looks like for local leaders in our community? In our new “How I Work” series, we’re pulling back the curtain on the daily routines, work habits, and insights of the people shaping our area.

  • First up: Destin Mayor Bobby Wagner, who shares his early morning routine, his approach to staying focused amid competing priorities, and the advice that’s shaped his leadership style.

What’s your current job title and where do you work?

Mayor – Destin, FL

What’s your morning routine?

6am run, 6:35 meditation, 7am shower

Describe what a typical workday looks like for you.

Everyday is different – Video production, tree planting, government meetings, etc.

What’s the first thing you do when you get to work (or start your workday)?

The ONE thing for the day. Since I wear several hats it’s very easy for me to get distracted and pulled away from the important task for the day. So I do my best to complete the single most important thing as early as possible before my phone and emails start blowing up.

What tools, apps, or gadgets can’t you live without?

Sundial app (lighting for gigs), several AI tools for organization and research.

Apple or Android?

Apple – but not a diehard.

What’s your go-to coffee (or tea) order?

Double shot espresso from East Pass Coffee in Destin.

What’s your go-to lunch spot or work snack?

Trying to not go out as much… With 2 of my 3 hats non-paying gigs, I am making the most of every dollar.

What’s one local business you love supporting?

Bitterroot in Destin – true farm to table and Chief Chad is an amazing human and cook.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

Every adult is figuring it out as they go. Nobody truly has it all figured out. JUST START!

If you could give your even-younger self a piece of advice, what would it be?

Take time to breathe. Ambition is great, but so is the present moment.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I went to college planning to be the band director of FWBHS (Go Vikes!)

What’s your favorite local event or tradition?

Opening day of Destin Little League baseball.

What’s inspiring you right now (book, podcast, person, hobby)?

Walkable cities – Jeff Sparks

Early bird or night owl?

Early bird by nature. I’m always the first in the group to fall asleep.

Most used emoji?

🫶

Music while working — yes or no? (and if yes, what’s on your playlist?)

Yes, wookiefoot. Also a lot of podcast (Diary of a CEO) and audible books.

Favorite motivational quote?

Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Standing desk or sitting? Mix?

Sitting but would love to try standing.

If you could give any advice for someone getting into the same field as you, what advice would you give?

Everyone just wants to be heard, loved, and understood. Local politics isn’t about parties it’s about people.
