The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution donated a Liberty Tree to the Crestview History Museum, with the cypress tree now planted in the museum’s front yard at 198 S Wilson Street.
- The tree mirrors one that once stood on the property many years ago and “symbolizes our nation’s rich history and our community’s connection to the past,” according to a press release.
A special dedication ceremony was held at the Bush House on July 12, 2025. During the event, the Mayor’s Advisory Council honored the tree by dedicating it to the late Sheila Dunning, who served as a commercial horticulture agent in Okaloosa County for 22 years.
Dunning was known for her exceptional knowledge of plants and pests and was always eager to assist others. Her impact on the community influenced many lives, from 4-H youth to Green Industries professionals.
According to the city, “the planting of this Liberty Tree stands not only as a reminder of the importance of preserving our history and nurturing our environment but also as a tribute to Sheila Dunning’s legacy.” The tree “serves as a living symbol of resilience, reminding us of the dedication and positive influence that figures like Sheila have had on our community.”
The city said the Liberty Tree “connects us to our heritage” while inspiring efforts “to foster future generations, ensuring that both our history and our environment thrive for years to come.”
