A Mary Esther man was arrested Thursday night after an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy reportedly clocked him driving 100 mph in a 45 mph zone on Emerald Coast Parkway in Destin.
- The 25-year-old was arrested under Florida’s Super Speeder Law, which took effect July 1 and defines when speeding becomes a criminal offense rather than a traffic infraction, according to the OCSO.
The law targets extreme speeding by imposing criminal charges, mandatory court appearances, fines and possible jail time on drivers who exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more or drive 100 mph or more.
For a first offense, penalties include up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine. Repeat offenders face increased consequences, including up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine and potential license revocation.
The law is triggered when a driver exceeds the posted speed limit by more than 50 mph or drives 100 mph or more, especially in a reckless manner that endangers others.
