Last Friday night, history was made for Rocky Bayou boys soccer.
- With a penalty-kick victory over University Christian, the Knights became region champions for the first time in program history and punched their ticket to the Final Four.
It was a win that tested their resilience. University Christian got on the board first with a goal from Je Tee around the 24th-minute mark, and the Christians carried that 1-0 lead into the half.
But the Knights found a way to respond. Around the 53rd-minute mark, a foul on University Christian resulted in a Dominic Ferguson penalty kick, which he converted to tie it at 1-1.
- After that, neither team could break through for the rest of regulation or overtime, sending the match to penalty kicks.
Rocky Bayou made two and University Christian made two before Ferguson stepped up and converted again to give the Knights a 3-2 lead. The game came down to University Christian’s final attempt off the foot of Carter DeLossantos, whose shot sailed over the net — and the Knights had made history.
Now, in their first Final Four matchup in program history, Rocky Bayou will face The Pine School on Friday. The Pine School recently beat Orangewood Christian 2-0. The winner of the Rocky Bayou-Pine School game will play the winner of the Canterbury-BridgePrep Village Green game, also played Friday, in the Class 1A state championship on Saturday.
All three matchups will be held at Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale.
