Week 6 was a fun one to watch.

Niceville came down to the wire against Tate in a win that kept its hopes of extending a quarter-century playoff streak alive, South Walton took control of Class 3A, District 1 with a crucial homecoming win over Pine Forest, and Choctaw and Walton both turned in dominant wins.

Here are all the highlights from around the area.

Niceville 34, Tate 33

The stakes couldn’t have been higher for Niceville, which in all likelihood would have missed the playoffs for the first time since 2000 with a loss.

The Eagles came through at home to move to 2-0 in district play, as Deegan McCoy threw touchdown passes to Jakobe Gilyard and Caleb Leonard, Gilyard added two short touchdown runs and Georgia Tech commit Noah Renes scored on a 1-yard run out of the “heavy” package.

Tate took a 27-26 lead in the second half, but Gilyard punched in the go-ahead score, and Renes picked up a first down on fourth-and-short with a minute and a half remaining to seal it.

South Walton 28, Pine Forest 20

The Seahawks absolutely needed this win, and they got it, as South Walton improved to 5-1 and took control of Class 3A, District 1.

Pine Forest went up early on a long touchdown run from Zakavious Andrews, but South Walton responded when J.D. Brown hit Harper Rooney for a touchdown to go up 7-6. The defense held from there, and Carter Hawk scored to put the Seahawks up 14-6 in the second quarter. Andrews answered with another touchdown to make it 14-12 at halftime.

South Walton remained in control in the second half. Connor Rooney scored out of the wildcat to make it 21-12, and while Andrews completed the hat trick, Rooney added another touchdown to go along with an interception to make it a 28-20 final. South Walton now prepares for a trip to Walton next week.

Choctaw 43, Milton 15

Choctaw turned in a dominant showing for its third straight win, which doubled as its first district win as the Indians look to capture a fourth straight district title.

Dante Whidbee ran for two touchdowns, Von’Tavious Keller added a rushing touchdown of his own and Baker Giles threw a touchdown pass to Carter Marracco, who also returned a kickoff for a score. Jordyn Long added a pick-six off Panthers quarterback Damylan Woodberry.

Choctaw led 36-7 at halftime, with Milton getting on the board when Woodberry hit a wide-open Jackson Dinkins for a touchdown. Choctaw triggered the running clock in the third quarter, and the Panthers tacked on one final score when Woodberry found Zi Hudson for a touchdown and Milton converted the 2-point try, but Choctaw still won 43-15.

Fort Walton Beach 35, Gulf Breeze 21

For the first time since 2007, the Vikings are 2-0 in district play.

In an emotional game following the news of head coach Josh Pulliam’s cancer diagnosis, Fort Walton Beach got back to .500 with a win over Gulf Breeze.

The Vikings raced out to an early 14-0 lead and later led 21-7, as TyShaun Montgomery scored on both a run and a return and Cannon Wilbur added a touchdown of his own. The Dolphins stormed back before the break when quarterback Beckett Smith hit Kai Kael for a field-flipping catch, and Smith then took it in himself from 5 yards out to make it 21-14 at halftime.

When the third quarter began, the Vikings defense forced a punt, and Lavin McDaniel hit Landon McKuhen for a touchdown. The Dolphins added another score on a Smith-to-Kael connection, but Karmelo Thomas ran in a touchdown of his own late in the fourth quarter to seal it.

Walton 36, Freeport 3

In Walton’s homecoming game, the Braves won both a district and rivalry matchup against Freeport, continuing their undefeated season thanks to strong days at the office from Whitton West and Rodney Clinch.

Walton led 16-0 at halftime and stayed in control in the second half to put the game away. The Braves host South Walton next week.

Baker 42, North Bay Haven 6

The Gators improved to 4-2 with a drubbing of North Bay Haven on the road.

Baker raced out to a 21-6 halftime lead and scored three more touchdowns in the second half. Quarterback Dawson Mitchem ran for two touchdowns, Chasen Lawrence and Calvin Wilks III each added a rushing touchdown, and Lawrence also came up with a clutch fumble recovery.

Pace 41, Crestview 27

South Alabama commit Makael Williams turned in a hat trick to lead Pace, which led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Crestview showed signs of life as Manwell Robinson ran for two touchdowns, but the Patriots remained in control the whole game for a 41-27 win. The Bulldogs are now 0-6 overall and 0-2 in a stacked Class 5A district, leaving a difficult road to the playoffs.

Pensacola Catholic 45, Destin 8

Destin played the first district game in the history of its program, and Pensacola Catholic came away with a running-clock victory.

Crusaders quarterback Jaylin Brown threw four touchdown passes, and Ethan Crandall added two rushing touchdowns. Pensacola Catholic led 38-0 at halftime, triggering the running clock, and added another touchdown in the third quarter.

Destin got on the board in the fourth when Kellen Ramsey hit a wide-open Chase Wandrick for a touchdown, and Donnie Couitt ran in the 2-point conversion. Pensacola Catholic improved to 5-1 with the 45-8 win.

Brookwood 34, Rocky Bayou 20

Rocky Bayou fell to 0-5 against Brookwood on Friday night.

The Warriors raced out to an early 13-0 lead, but the Knights made it 13-7 at halftime thanks to a rushing touchdown from Isaiah Gayle. The teams traded touchdowns before Brookwood quarterback Aidan Austin took over, and while Rocky Bayou stayed competitive throughout, Brookwood won 34-20.
