Across Okaloosa County, schools observe Patriot Day with ceremonies and America 250 tributes

Okaloosa County schools held Sept. 11 observances district-wide, with Niceville High receiving a Capitol-flown flag for America 250.
OCSD

Schools across the Okaloosa County School District observed Patriot Day on Sept. 11 with classroom lessons, student artwork, JROTC ceremonies, pep rallies and moments of remembrance honoring those lost in the 2001 terrorist attacks and those who have served the nation since.

At Niceville High School, a pregame ceremony at Friday night’s football game included a presentation on the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, the families affected and the first responders who responded that day. The presentation also recognized members of the U.S. military who have served and continue to serve.

During the ceremony, NHS Principal Amy Meyer, members of her administration and students received an American flag commemorating America 250 — the 250th anniversary of the United States.

  • The flag had been flown over the U.S. Capitol at the request of Congressman Jimmy Patronis and was accompanied by a certificate commemorating its flight.

The presentation at Niceville High was part of a district-wide effort directed by Superintendent Marcus Chambers. Each Okaloosa County public school has received an American flag commemorating 250 years of the nation’s history.

None of the district’s current students were born when the Sept. 11 attacks occurred.
