Eglin Air Force Base began a counter unmanned aerial systems experiment on September 3 to test technology designed to combat small drone threats to military installations.

  • The North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command are conducting the experiment, known as Falcon Peak, which will run through Sept. 19. The experiment examines potential uses of technology to detect, track, identify and defeat small unmanned aircraft system threats.

The experiment uses counter-UAS system capabilities to address what officials describe as the growing threat to U.S. military installations from small drones.

Unmanned aircraft systems will launch from Santa Rosa Island between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the experiment period. Vessels must remain clear of the hazard area during these operating hours.

The Eglin Joint Test and Training Operations Control Center will broadcast hot range advisories and local notices to mariners on Channel 16 and on HF upper sideband 2182 KHZ throughout the experiment.
