Fort Walton Beach punched its ticket to the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive season Wednesday night, holding off St. Augustine 3-1 behind a dominant two-way performance from Izzy Douglas.
- Douglas struck out 14 and allowed just five hits in the circle while collecting three hits and two RBIs at the plate in what could have been the final home game for the Lady Vikings’ senior class.
“I enjoy these kids and I enjoy the teams, and any time we can continue the sport with great people, it’s exciting and fun,” Head Coach Taryn Gray said.
Douglas put Fort Walton Beach on the board in the third inning with an RBI double that scored Anna Beyhl, then added an RBI single in the fifth that plated Beyhl again. The Lady Vikings tacked on another run later in the fifth when Ava Blankenship reached on an error after Lady Yellowjackets first baseman Gus Campbell couldn’t come down with a fly ball, allowing Douglas to score.
“Izzy’s a competitor, and she always is and she always will be, but she pitched a heck of a game and she turned it on with the bat,” Gray said.

St. Augustine threatened in the seventh, getting a single from Campbell and an RBI single from Gia Johnson before Alana Heilman ripped a double to put runners in scoring position with the tying run at the plate.
Gray called her team in for a quick word.
“I just walked in and told them we have one more out to get, and we’re going to bear down and do it,” Gray said.
Douglas got Caroline Larrabee to ground out to end the threat, sealing the Lady Vikings’ 11th consecutive win.
“We’re just playing comfortable. I have nothing to lose, all the expectations were against us and we have something to prove,” Douglas said.
Fort Walton Beach travels to Baker County in the Sweet 16 on Tuesday. The host team advanced with an 11-0 win over Menendez on Wednesday.
“Every team we play from here on out is going to be a tough opponent, and so we have to make sure that we stay doing the things Fort Walton Beach knows how to do,” Gray said.
“I don’t think it matters who we play. I’m ready for whoever,” Douglas added.
