FPL launches back-to-school STEM programs for teachers and students

Florida Power & Light offers free educational initiatives including $50,000 classroom grants, drone technology training and energy conservation shows for local schools.

Florida Power & Light Company is rolling out free educational programs for Okaloosa County students and teachers as the new school year begins, with initiatives designed to boost science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning.

  • The utility company is offering four distinct programs targeting students from elementary through high school, including substantial grants to transform classroom environments and hands-on technology training.

“At FPL, we believe that investing in education is investing in our community’s future,” said Kate Cotner, FPL director of community engagement. “Through programs like classroom makeover grants, Captain Wattage energy shows and our Drones in School initiative, we’re empowering teachers and students with the tools they need to succeed.”

The centerpiece initiative offers $50,000 grants to 10 schools within FPL’s service area this fall. The classroom makeover grants aim to transform learning spaces into 21st-century environments, providing eligible public, private and charter schools across all grade levels the opportunity to update technology and resources while advancing curriculum and increasing STEM education exposure.

Elementary schools can register for Captain Wattage, a free energy education show designed to captivate students while delivering energy conservation messages. Schools can sign up here for presentations during fall, spring and summer camp sessions.

  • The Drones in Schools program addresses Florida’s significant demand for aviation professionals by helping students develop technical skills using small-scale drone technology in a safe environment. Teachers can receive comprehensive training while FPL funds teams and sponsors competitions, giving students hands-on experience with cutting edge technology. Schools interested in participating can contact the education team at Education@FPL.com

FPL also supports the New Worlds Reading program, which provides enrolled students with monthly books and activities tailored to their interests from enrollment through fifth grade. The program helps parents support their children’s reading development at home while teachers reinforce literacy skills in the classroom.

Information about student qualification and FPL’s literacy support is available here, along with details about additional programs the company supports.
