The Estate Planning Council of the Emerald Coast will host The Planning Summit: Estate, Financial, and Tax Strategies from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 22, at Northwest Florida State College’s Niceville campus, Building 400, Room 302.
- The event is free and open to the public. Breakfast items will be provided. Seating is limited, and organizers are asking attendees to RSVP.
The summit is scheduled during National Estate Planning Awareness Week, which runs Oct. 19-25.
Presenters will include financial planners, estate attorneys, certified public accountants and nonprofit executives volunteering their time.
The event is organized around three topics: estate, financial and tax planning. According to the event flyer, attendees will receive an estate planning checklist.
Among the council’s board members is Whitney Smith, an attorney with Fleet, Smith & Freeman in Shalimar. In an interview with Get The Coast in September, Smith discussed the risks of do-it-yourself estate plans, including missing or incorrect witnesses, improper notarization and documents that fail to spell out how a plan will be carried out.
Smith recommended reviewing an estate plan every three to five years, or after a major life change such as marriage, divorce, the birth of children or a significant change in assets.
“Your life changes every three to five years,” Smith said at the time.
The Estate Planning Council of the Emerald Coast is affiliated with the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils, according to the council’s website.
