Okaloosa School District honors students at Take Stock in Children S.T.A.R.S. Ceremony

The annual ceremony recognized 12 incoming freshmen entering the program and 19 graduating seniors who earned two-year college scholarships through years of dedication.

The Okaloosa County School District celebrated students in the Take Stock in Children program at its annual S.T.A.R.S. Ceremony, honoring 12 incoming freshmen beginning the program and 19 graduating seniors who completed it to earn two-year college scholarships.

  • The event was supported by the Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation. Lori Lipnicky, TSIC college readiness coach, introduced the students and celebrated their accomplishments alongside mentors, educators, families and supporters.

Take Stock in Children helps students reach educational and career goals through mentorship, college readiness coaching and scholarships. Participants are selected based on academic potential, financial need and dedication. To remain in the program, students must:

  • Meet regularly with their mentors
  • Maintain strong academics
  • Remain drug- and crime-free
  • Stay active in school and the community

“One of the greatest investments is in our students’ futures,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “Take Stock in Children provides the support, encouragement, and opportunities students need for academic and personal success. We are proud of their perseverance, leadership, and commitment. Their achievements reflect the dedication of mentors, families, educators, and partners who believe in our children.”

A highlight of the evening came when Shalytha Payne-Blevins, a teacher at Crestview High School, presented the Outstanding Senior Award to her mentee, Aiden Sexton, recognizing his achievements and commitment throughout the program.

Kathleen Ball, a school counselor at Ruckel Middle School, shared her personal journey with attendees and encouraged students to pursue their goals and aspirations.

The district thanked mentors, families, donors and community partners for their role in supporting students across Okaloosa County.

“First off, start by wrapping all the Sherriff's department vehicles with Tourism advertisements. Now you can use TDC money. Second, Parks, Library, and Transit could be designated as Tourist Attractions....”
