The Okaloosa County School Board unanimously approved the appointment of Amy Morgan as the new principal of Destin Elementary School during its Monday night meeting.
- Morgan will succeed Amy Meyer, who was appointed principal of Niceville High School last month after longtime principal Charlie Marello moved to director of human resources.
Morgan currently serves as assistant principal at Lewis School and is a graduate of Okaloosa County Schools. She spent 18 years in the classroom, teaching at Florida State University, Destin Middle School and Plew Elementary School. She holds a specialist degree from Florida State University.
- Her honors include intensive reading teacher of the year, teacher of the year and secondary assistant principal of the year.
Superintendent Marcus Chambers presented Morgan to the board, describing her educational philosophy as rooted in the belief that every child can learn and achieve success when provided meaningful opportunities, strong relationships and a supportive learning environment.
“Thank you for entrusting Destin Elementary to my care,” Morgan told the board after the 5-0 vote. “I take this responsibility to heart, and I’m committed to making decisions that are always in the best interest of our students in Destin.”
Morgan thanked her husband, Brian, her parents, and her family for their support. She also recognized mentors and staff at Lewis School.
She praised outgoing leadership at Destin Elementary, including Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Brown, noting the school’s designation as a school of excellence has provided tremendous opportunities for students.
Morgan also highlighted the new third- through fifth-grade classroom wing funded through the half-cent sales tax, saying the addition will allow students to complete all eight elementary years together on one campus.
“Destin Elementary is a beautiful example of what strong community support for public education can accomplish, and I’m excited to be part of that,” Morgan said.
