Florida Power & Light Company is giving high school seniors passionate about robotics and aviation a chance to turn their extracurricular interests into college funding, with $45,000 in scholarships now available for students across the utility’s service area.
- The company announced three scholarship opportunities: two $20,000 awards for students who participated in FIRST, VEX or B.E.S.T robotics programs, and one $5,000 scholarship for a student involved in Drones in School. Applications are open now through April 13, 2026.
“We’re thrilled to expand our scholarship programs for eligible high school seniors,” said Kate Cotner, FPL Director of Community Engagement. “Robotics and drones offer fantastic opportunities for students to build critical skills in problem-solving, teamwork and innovation — all essential in today’s fast-changing world. By supporting these programs, we’re investing in the future and empowering the next generation of STEM leaders.”
The scholarships are part of FPL’s ongoing commitment to expanding STEM pathways for Florida students. Recipients will receive funding to support undergraduate study in STEM-related fields at accredited colleges, universities or vocational-technical schools.
For Umair Kazi, the 2025 recipient of FPL’s Robotics Scholarship, the award made a significant difference in his educational journey.
- “This scholarship was extremely beneficial for both myself and my family,” Kazi said. “It allowed me to attend Georgia Tech out of state, which I absolutely love. I’m very grateful.”
Both public and private high school seniors within FPL’s service area are eligible to apply.
Robotics scholarship requirements
Applicants for the robotics scholarships must have participated in the FIRST, B.E.S.T. or VEX robotics program for at least two years, with completion occurring within the last two years. Students must plan to enroll full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the 2026-27 academic year, pursuing a degree in engineering, information management or another approved STEM-related program.
- A minimum weighted GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required, along with good standing in the robotics club and a letter of recommendation from a robotics coach or teacher.
Drones in school scholarship requirements
Applicants for the drone scholarship must have participated in the Drones in School program for at least two years, with completion occurring within the last two years. Students must plan to enroll in a post-secondary vocational, technical or trade school program, or a two-year to four-year college or university for the 2026-27 academic year, pursuing a degree, license or certification in aviation, trade or vocation.
- Good standing in the drone club and a letter of recommendation from a drone coach or teacher are required. No minimum GPA is required for the drone scholarship.
