A state Insurance Assistance Hub is open in Destin from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, to help residents with insurance claims and questions after Hurricane Isaias, according to the City of Destin.
- The hub is at the Morgan Sports Center, 4200 Indian Bayou Trail. The city said it is next to Morgan’s Playground by City Hall.
Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia traveled to Destin to open it 36 hours after Hurricane Isaias made landfall, according to the city.
Who is there to help
Insurance carriers and experts from the department’s Division of Consumer Services are on hand to help people navigate the claims process and answer insurance questions, according to Destin Mayor Bobby Wagner.
At least six of the area’s insurance carriers were available when the hub opened Sunday, Wagner said, and additional insurers were expected Monday.
Wagner encouraged residents with property damage to talk to their insurance company in person.
Tips for filing a claim
At a press conference Saturday on Okaloosa Island, Ingoglia advised residents to keep a record of every conversation with their insurance company and adjusters. He also recommended taking photos of the inside and outside of their homes, including before and after any repairs.
Ingoglia warned residents to verify the identity of any contractor or adjuster before signing a contract.
“If somebody comes, knocks on your door, make sure that they are who they are, get their credentials,” Ingoglia said.
