Destin expands Hurricane Isaias debris collection to six zones

Destin is adding two debris collection trucks Friday, expanding Hurricane Isaias cleanup to six zones, as crews have collected 7,760 cubic yards of vegetative debris.

The City of Destin will deploy two additional debris collection trucks Friday, expanding Hurricane Isaias cleanup to six zones at the same time, according to an update the city posted Wednesday.

  • The city said it continues to make progress on storm debris removal. To help residents follow collection operations, Destin has been divided into designated debris pickup zones.

Crews are currently working in Zones 2, 7, 8 and 10. The two additional trucks will be deployed to Zones 5 and 6 beginning Friday, according to the city.

As of Wednesday’s update, crews had collected 7,760 cubic yards of vegetative debris and removed 140 truckloads of debris, 88 hazardous hanging limbs and six hazardous leaning trees, the city said.

The city reminded residents to separate vegetative debris from construction and demolition debris and place materials along the curb. Residents should keep roadways, sidewalks, storm drains, fire hydrants and utility equipment clear and avoid parking along streets where collection crews are working.

“Debris collection is a substantial undertaking, and crews will continue working throughout the city. Multiple collection passes are planned, so residents should not be concerned if all debris is not removed during the initial pass,” the city said.

The city thanked residents for their continued patience and cooperation as it works to restore the community following Hurricane Isaias.
