A man was fatally shot by an Okaloosa County sheriff’s deputy Monday morning after firing at law enforcement officers responding to a domestic disturbance call, authorities said.

Two Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived at a townhome in the Wright area around 6:30 a.m. and encountered an armed male suspect inside the residence, according to a statement from the agency.

The suspect fired at least one shot at a deputy, who returned fire, the statement said. The man died at the scene.

  • Neither deputy was injured, nor was the homeowner who had called 911 for assistance.

The deputies involved will be placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting, which is standard protocol for use-of-force incidents, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities did not immediately release the name of the man killed or further information about what prompted the domestic disturbance call. Additional details are expected.
