Nighttime lane closures planned at Mid-Bay Bridge toll plaza for paving work

Drivers should expect alternating traffic and toll changes during overnight closures now underway through Sept. 3.

Nighttime lane closures are underway at the State Road 293 Mid-Bay Bridge toll plaza in Okaloosa County as crews carry out milling and paving operations.

  • The closures began Sunday and will continue nightly from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. through Thursday, Sept. 3, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

Through Tuesday, closures are taking place south of the toll plaza. Traffic is restricted to a single lane with two-way alternating traffic, and only one toll lane is open for both northbound and southbound drivers. Toll fares are being waived during the overnight work hours, and drivers are being directed to keep moving through the toll lanes.

The work shifts north of the toll plaza from Wednesday through Thursday. During those nights, the two northbound inside toll lanes and the two southbound inside toll lanes will be closed. Tolls will be electronic only — drivers without SunPass will be billed through Toll-By-Plate via mail.

Advanced warning signs, variable message boards, traffic control devices and flagmen will be in place to direct motorists through the work area.

All work is weather-dependent and could be delayed or rescheduled due to inclement weather. FDOT is reminding drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone, particularly at night, and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway. Speeding fines are doubled when workers are present.
