Okaloosa County schools cancel Tuesday afternoon, evening activities due to approaching storms

The school district cited forecasts of damaging winds and possible tornadoes expected between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 3 a.m. Wednesday as reason for the cancellations.

The Okaloosa County School District has canceled all afterschool activities Tuesday afternoon and evening as a severe storm system approaches the region.

  • In an announcement released Tuesday afternoon, district officials cited information from Okaloosa County Director of Public Safety Patrick Maddox and the National Weather Service about an enhanced risk storm forecasted to enter the Florida Panhandle Tuesday evening.

“The main threats with this storm are the possibility of damaging winds and tornadoes,” the district statement said. “While the exact timing is uncertain, it is expected to affect our area between 8 p.m. this evening (Tuesday) and 3 a.m. Wednesday.”

The cancellations do not include daycare or tutoring programs, according to the announcement.

  • Parents and students were advised to check their school’s social media and website, or to contact their activity’s point of contact for information about rescheduled events.

The decision comes as emergency officials have placed the entire Okaloosa County area under an enhanced risk category for severe weather.
