Elementary students from across Okaloosa County traded their classroom desks for running shoes this week as the Okaloosa County School District hosted its inaugural Intramural Cross Country Championship Meet.
- The two-day event brought together top fourth- and fifth-grade runners from schools in the district’s North, Central and South zones. Central and South Zone students competed Monday, Nov. 2, at the Twin Oaks/Mullet Festival site in Niceville, while North Zone students took to the course Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Blackwater Golf Course in Crestview.
Each participating elementary school was represented by its top student runners in the fourth- and fifth-grade divisions. Students competed in separate boys’ and girls’ races, and the top 10 finishers in each race earned medals.
The meet also recognized zone team champions. Plew Elementary School swept both the boys’ and girls’ divisions in the Central Zone, while Elliott Point Elementary School claimed both championships in the South Zone. In the North Zone, Pineview School earned the boys’ championship and Antioch Elementary School took home the girls’ title.
According to the district, the championship also gave students an opportunity to demonstrate values that extend beyond the finish line, including perseverance, resilience, determination and sportsmanship.
“Events like these are about much more than competition,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “They give students opportunities to challenge themselves, set goals, overcome obstacles, celebrate achievement, and build relationships beyond the classroom. We are proud of every student who participated and represented their schools so well.”
Families and community members also came out to cheer on the young athletes, including Christy Geldert, an Edge Elementary School parent.
“This event was a wonderful opportunity for our children to participate in some healthy competition and outdoor fun! It was equally rewarding being on the spectator side to see our community come together to encourage and cheer on our children,” Geldert said. “I’m very grateful that my daughter had this opportunity, as it will no doubt be a highlight of her elementary years.”
The district thanked its physical education teachers and committee members for planning the inaugural event. District officials said they hope the meet will become a lasting elementary athletics tradition.
