The Walton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what “appears to be” a fatal hit-and-run incident on Wednesday morning involving a pedestrian on the north side of Highway 98 near Mussett Bayou in Santa Rosa Beach.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies are on the scene, and initial evidence suggests that the incident resulted in the death of the pedestrian. The Florida Highway Patrol has been notified and is en route to conduct a thorough investigation.

As a result of the incident, one westbound lane of Highway 98 in the area has been blocked by the Sheriff’s Office. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when traveling through the area and should expect extended delays due to the ongoing investigation and lane closure.

No further details regarding the identity of the victim or the circumstances surrounding the possible hit-and-run have been released at this time. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
