Fort Walton Beach city officials presented U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Marcus Wu with a certificate of appreciation for intervening in an April 22 dog attack on a woman along Holmes Boulevard.

  • Wu and a fellow airman were driving on Holmes Boulevard when they witnessed the woman being mauled by one of two dogs, according to Fort Walton Beach Police Chief Robert Bage.

“He stopped his car and intervened and actually wrestled with one of the dogs for several minutes until the police department could get there to assist,” Bage said while presenting the certificate during the City Council’s May 19 meeting.

Bage said Wu’s intervention likely prevented a far worse outcome for the woman.

“We truly believe that if [it] wasn’t for his actions, that lady would have been seriously injured, and possibly killed by one of the dogs,” Bage said. “Not only does he serve our country in its defense overseas, but he also stepped up and took actions here locally and really went above and beyond what anybody else would have done.”

Wu credited his fellow airman with helping during the rescue.

“I couldn’t have done it alone if I was just there by myself that night,” Wu said.

The City of Fort Walton Beach thanked Wu and recognized the contributions of military personnel serving both the country and the local community.

  1. We need more details about the attack. Exactly where on Holmes that it happened? What time? Were they local neighborhood dogs or were they strays? What has happened to the dogs? I walk my pugs on Holmes regularly and now my alert bells are fired up. They were not her dogs, were they? I have seen dogs turn on their owners more than once. Please update us.
