Bit-Wizards, a Fort Walton Beach managed IT services firm with more than 25 years of local tech support experience, is recognizing the veterans on its staff during Military Appreciation Month, including lead infrastructure engineer Cody Covert.

  • Covert’s path into IT began in the Air Force, where his primary duty was aircraft maintenance. After supervisors noticed his aptitude for computers and technology, he transitioned into work as a client systems administrator, managing 250 machines and printers and about 300 user accounts for his unit.

He went on to earn a Security+ certification and served as a network administrator and information system security officer, helping maintain and protect his organization’s systems. During that time, he also introduced radio-frequency identification systems to his maintenance unit and authored the initial process for migrating operations to the new technology.

After retiring from the Air Force, Covert earned a degree in computer information systems from the Florida Institute of Technology. While interning at CareerSource Okaloosa, where he helped other veterans explore career options, he learned about Bit-Wizards.

Today, Covert brings his military-honed mindset to the Bit-Wizards managed IT services team, helping businesses solve infrastructure and security problems across a network of nearly 3,500 desktops that supports 180 clients nationwide.

“I’m grateful for what the Air Force instilled in me,” Covert said. “It gave me discipline, taught me how to stay calm under pressure and how to take ownership. That experience shaped the way I work today — my focus on the details, supporting the team and always thinking about how to serve the people who depend on us.”

Bit-Wizards CEO Vince Mayfield, an Air Force veteran, said employees like Covert have shaped the company’s performance over more than two decades in business.

“When getting the mission done, it’s about the right balance of accountability and empathy, and never losing sight of the people who depend on you,” Mayfield said. “That’s why veterans thrive here. The work is real, the standards are high and the team matters.”

Bit-Wizards welcomes applicants at any point on the IT career path, including transitioning active-duty service members.
