FDOT completes $15 million Highway 98 project, begins $7.9 million phase in Okaloosa

The Florida Department of Transportation has finished a $15 million resurfacing project on a segment of U.S. 98 and begun work on an adjacent $7.9 million project.

The Florida Department of Transportation has completed a $15 million resurfacing project on U.S. 98 in Okaloosa County while launching a second phase of improvements on an adjacent stretch of the highway.

  • The completed project spanned 6.9 miles from Josie Road to Florida Place Southeast. Work included milling and resurfacing the roadway, minor widening of shoulders and intersections, drainage improvements, signalization upgrades and new signage and pavement markings.

The project also upgraded sidewalks and pedestrian crossings to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

This month, FDOT began a $7.9 million project on State Road 30 (U.S. 98) from the Santa Rosa County line to west of Josie Road. The work will include milling and resurfacing the roadway, updating signage and pavement markings and several intersection improvements.

Planned intersection work includes extending the left turn lane at Avenue Du Fontaine Bleau, widening the right turn lane and median opening at A-21 Road, and adding a curb extension at Green Drive. Median modifications are also planned.

Drivers may experience intermittent nighttime lane closures and restrictions between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. during construction.

The project is scheduled for completion in late 2026.

“I like the pedestrian bridge idea but I wonder if it would have to be too tall to accomodate harbor boat traffic. Very interesting concept!”

“With a rock seawall along the water it’s not a beach, just a patch of sand. Take the docks out, add some parking and call it a day”

“Since there is very limited transient docks available in Destin, the docks should be available for guests with overnight parking. The City should consider a Pedestrian Bridge over the Harbor...”
