FDOT announces overnight repairs on U.S. Highway 98 after Monday’s traffic issues

A day after severe traffic disruptions led to a construction halt, FDOT plans overnight repairs on U.S. 98's eastbound lanes near Hurlburt Field, with work scheduled during off-peak hours to minimize impact on commuters.

After temporarily halting a weeklong construction project that caused severe traffic delays on Monday, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced a revised plan for overnight drainage pipe repairs on U.S. 98 in Okaloosa County.

  • The new work schedule will restrict only eastbound traffic to one lane between Robys Drive and La Brista Beach Circle from 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, until 6 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23. Westbound lanes will remain fully open during the repairs.

This modified approach comes after Monday’s traffic standstill, which affected thousands of commuters and prompted Hurlburt Field to implement emergency schedule changes for military personnel.

The overnight repairs are part of FDOT’s larger U.S. 98 resurfacing project from west of Josie Road to Florida Place Southeast in Okaloosa County.

FDOT notes that all activities are weather dependent and may be rescheduled if needed. Drivers are urged to use caution when traveling through the work zone, especially at night, and to watch for construction workers and equipment.

  1. What happened on Monday could have been avoided if whoever authorized the work had done their homework, and figured out how many people use this highway daily. Ask any local, and we would have advised against it! The ones making these decisions obviously don’t live and work here!
