Nathan Sparks has long been familiar with the Emerald Coast, first visiting as a child on summer vacations before eventually returning to the area professionally.
- Originally from Birmingham, he now calls Niceville home and has spent more than a decade helping shape Okaloosa County’s economic future.
As Executive Director of One Okaloosa EDC, Nathan’s work centers on connecting businesses, military leaders, educators, and elected officials to strengthen the region’s economy. His days often include hosting companies considering investment in the area, supporting local employers, and promoting Okaloosa County across the country — all with the goal of creating long-term opportunity for the community.
Are you a life-long local, if not, where are you from originally and how did you end up in the area?
I’m originally from Birmingham, but I’ve been acquainted with the Emerald Coast since I was a little tike on vacation every summer. I previously worked in the area when I was at The St. Joe Company in the early 2000s. I was selected to lead One Okaloosa in 2013 and my family and I have called Niceville home ever since.
What’s your current job title and where do you work?
Executive Director, One Okaloosa EDC
What’s your morning routine?
Depending on the day, I either tune into NewsNation’s “Morning in America” over a cup of coffee or jump on the stationary bike for a quick ride while either watching the news or listening to an Audiobook. I also have a Daily Devotional that I read before taking a peek at my emails and Outlook calendar.

Describe what a typical workday looks like for you.
One reason I love what I do is that there is truly no such thing as a routine day. Our days may include hosting prospective businesses that are considering investing in our area, meeting with any number of military, educational or elected leaders, attending a trade show to promote our community or helping a local employer either solve a challenge or capitalize on an opportunity.
What’s the first thing you do when you get to work (or start your workday)?
Check in with the team, and not necessarily about work. We’re not a big office “chit chat” environment, but it’s still important to me that my teammates know that I care about them and value our connection beyond 8-5, Monday-Friday.
What tools, apps, or gadgets can’t you live without?
I love my Sony noise canceling headphones. When flying, I pair them with an AirFly wireless adapter so that I can comfortably watch and listen to in flight entertainment.
Apple or Android?
I recently – and somewhat reluctantly – transitioned to an iPhone.
What’s your go-to coffee (or tea) order?
I’m pretty simple. Strong coffee with a splash of cream.
What’s your go-to lunch spot or work snack?
I’m gluten free, and two snacks that keep me going are Kind bars and Nature’s Bakery gluten free fig bars.
What’s one local business you love supporting?
Chick-Fil-A. Not only is the food consistently good (yes, that even includes the gluten-free bun), but the culture is second to none.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?
OK, I’m going to tell on myself here. Working with so many businesses, government officials and military leaders, we meet a TON of people. That’s just the nature of economic development, and it can be challenging to remember everyone you encounter. This is precisely why a mentor of mine told me never to say “it’s nice to meet you” – because if you’ve already met that person previously you run the risk of offending them. Instead, simply say “it’s nice to see you” – which applies whether you are seeing them for the first time or the fifteenth time!
If you could give your 20-year-old self a piece of advice, what would it be?
Spend more time with your grandparents. There will come a day in the not-too-distant future when you will wish they were still here.
How do you unwind after a long day?
When the weather cooperates, my wife and I like to take in the last rays of sunlight from our screened porch while listening to music. On occasion, we’ll even add in a nice glass of wine.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I’m a huge live music fan – especially classic rock. I’ve been fortunate to see some phenomenal concerts in my life – Pink Floyd, U2, Bon Jovi, Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Bob Dylan, Phish, Widespread Panic, The Beach Boys, Eagles, Jimmy Buffet and many, many more.

What’s your favorite local event or tradition?
I actually just attended it! The annual FPL Economic Symposium held at Sandestin is a stellar event that brings together hundreds of northwest Florida leaders from every sector imaginable for two days of actionable insights, inspirational presentations and top notch networking.
What’s inspiring you right now (book, podcast, person, hobby)?
I am always inspired by our amazing men and women in uniform – along with the families who support them. With the war in Iran currently underway, I find myself marveling even more at the strength and resilience of these fine Americans. God bless them all!
Early bird or night owl?
More of an early bird these days.

Most used emoji?
Thumbs up!
Music while working — yes or no? (and if yes, what’s on your playlist?)
No, as much as I love music, I prefer a quiet work environment.
Favorite motivational quote?
“One man with courage makes a majority.” – Andrew Jackson
Standing desk or sitting? Mix?
Sitting, although I don’t remain seated when on the phone. My wife accuses me of “pacing” when I’m on a call.😆
If you could give any advice for someone getting into the same field as you, what advice would you give?
Find a mentor or two and truly use them as a guidepost and sounding board. Navigating professional challenges with a trusted advisor firmly in your corner is much easier than going it alone!
Are you a member of the FWB Chamber of Commerce?
Yes
