Niceville track and field brings home team title, five individual state championships

The Eagles claimed four of the top five spots in boys' shot put and crowned a state champion in pole vault on their way to the Class 3A team title.

Day 3 of the FHSAA Track and Field State Championships at Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus in Jacksonville featured strong showings from Niceville, Choctaw, Fort Walton Beach, and Crestview, with the Eagles walking away as the Class 3A boys’ team champions.

  • Niceville finished with 88 points on the boys’ side, while the Lady Eagles placed second with 64 points. Choctaw’s boys tied for 14th with 10 points, and Fort Walton Beach tied for 22nd with one point.

Here’s how the area’s state qualifiers fared across every event.

Boys’ shot put — Niceville claims four of top five

The boys’ shot put may have been where Niceville locked up the team title, as the Eagles claimed four of the top five finishers. Charlie Perkins won the state championship at 58 feet, 4¾ inches. Troy commit Nunu Krider finished just ¾ of an inch behind at 58-4, Trimarcus Mays came in third at 57-10¼, and Hudson Alt placed fifth at 55-7½.

Boys’ pole vault — Loicano wins, Kincaid finishes as runner-up

Niceville’s boys’ pole vault showing was a work of art. Asa Loicano captured the state championship at 15 feet, 9 inches, while teammate Jacob Kincaid was six inches behind at 15-3 to finish as the runner-up. Caleb Hurtado placed fourth at 14-9, and Jack Jones brought the Eagles a sixth-place finish at 14-3¼. Fort Walton Beach’s Alberto Gonzalez placed 16th at 12-3½.

Girls’ javelin — Plasier wins state title

Shelby Plasier brought the Lady Eagles a state title in the javelin, finishing at 148 feet, 4 inches. Teammate Lilly Dennison placed fourth at 126-3. Fort Walton Beach’s Janelle Dixon placed 18th at 106-11.

Girls’ 400 hurdles — Tolbert earns state championship

Saylor Tolbert earned Niceville another state championship with a time of 59.82 seconds in the 400 hurdles, finishing three seconds ahead of runner-up Lamayah Howard of Northwestern.

Wheelchair events — Gunter collects three state titles

Niceville’s Abigail Gunter had a dominant day in the wheelchair events, capturing state titles in the 100-meter dash (23.66 seconds), the 200-meter dash (48.11 seconds), and the wheelchair shot put (15 feet, 9½ inches).

Girls’ discus — Allen takes third

Kimah Allen, the Niceville star thrower committed to Hawaii, placed third in the discus at 146 feet — two feet behind runner-up Jamayia Holson and eight behind state champion Kennedy Scott from Lincoln. Dixon placed seventh at 131-7, while Niceville’s Emmerson Ealy placed 17th at 113-10.

Girls’ shot put — Allen adds another podium finish

Allen placed third in the shot put at 45 feet, 7¾ inches, half a foot behind runner-up Joniah Holson from Sebastian River and a foot behind state champion Cherldine Paul from Barron Collier. Crestview’s Alana Munoz placed 11th at 36-8¼. Choctaw’s Leonna McKinnie placed 14th at 36-3, and Fort Walton Beach’s Alexis Smith placed 16th at 35-11¼.

Boys’ discus — Perkins finishes as runner-up

Perkins added a runner-up finish in the boys’ discus at 184 feet, 9 inches — just half a foot behind state champion Colin Butler from Ponte Vedra. Fort Walton Beach’s Gabe Purselley placed 16th at 128-3.

Boys’ javelin — Hurtado and Threet go fourth and fifth

Hurtado placed fourth in the javelin at 185 feet, 7 inches, while teammate Mason Threet placed fifth at 181-7. Choctaw’s Ryne Burks came in eighth at 178-1.

Girls’ pole vault — LaGrosse leads three Lady Eagle qualifiers

Niceville had three state qualifiers in the girls’ pole vault. Katelyn LaGrosse finished fourth at 10 feet, 10 inches. Loxley Sheldon finished fifth, also at 10-10, and Taylor Kerle placed ninth at 10-4.

Girls’ 4×100 relay — Lady Eagles take third

The Lady Eagles team of Tolbert, Layla Wilson, Teaghan Schuessler, and Gracie Dennison placed third at 47.22 seconds, just two-hundredths of a second behind runner-up Dunbar and nine-hundredths behind state champion Norland.

Boys’ 4×100 relay — Eagles place third, Indians eighth

The Eagles’ team of Jakobe Gilyard, Jones, Andy Bocchino, and Parker Gregory placed third at 41.25 seconds, two-hundredths behind runner-up Bishop Moore and 29-hundredths behind state champion Rickards. Choctaw’s team of Jamaarie Alcide, Brody Combs, Amir Reese, and Rives Brown placed eighth at 41.72.

Girls’ 100 hurdles — Tolbert places fifth

Niceville had two qualifiers in the girls’ 100 hurdles. Tolbert placed fifth at 14.33 seconds, while Wilson came in 12th at 14.88.

Boys’ 800 run — Cutler earns runner-up finish for Choctaw

Brendan Cutler earned Choctaw a strong finish in the 800 run, placing second at 1:51.87 — just 47-hundredths of a second behind state champion Marcelo Mantecon from Belen Jesuit Prep.

Boys’ triple jump — Galindo places fourth

Niceville’s Jay Galindo placed fourth at 48 feet, 5¼ inches, half a foot behind third-place finisher Darian Blanks from Pine Forest, a foot behind runner-up O’Hara Tommie from Northeast, and two feet behind state champion Maxell Garcon from Gateway. Crestview’s Gabriel Gottlieb placed 14th at 44-2½.

Girls’ triple jump

Niceville’s Gracie Dennison placed seventh at 37 feet, 10 inches.

Boys’ high jump

Fort Walton Beach’s Caden White placed eighth in the high jump at 6 feet, 3½ inches, finishing in a four-way tie for fifth with Shondray Dixon from East Bay, Daniel McDaniel from Escambia, and Dillard’s Roshard Saintillus.

Girls’ 4×800 relay — Lady Eagles place fifth

The Lady Eagles’ team of Riley Marise, Delaney Diehl, Reese Putman, and Kate Tomaschko finished fifth at 9:26.14.

Boys’ 4×800 relay — Niceville seventh, Choctaw 10th

The Eagles’ team of Colin Gesch, Aiden Abrahams, Brody Mathis, and Myles Chojnowski finished seventh at 7:58.20. Choctaw’s team of Eli Marler, Cutler, Pavaughn Hamilton, and Martin Novak finished 10th at 8:12.22.

Girls’ 800 run

Tomaschko placed 10th at 2:18.28, while Marise placed 15th at 2:20.74.

Girls’ 1600 run

Choctaw’s Izzy Harter placed ninth at 5:11.54.

Girls’ 3200 run

Harter earned an eighth-place finish at 11:07.24.

Girls’ 400 dash

Niceville’s Kate Jannazo placed 12th at 57.15 seconds.

Boys’ 400 dash

Niceville’s Sawyer Buelow placed 12th at 49.18 seconds.

Girls’ 4×400 relay — Lady Eagles place seventh

The Lady Eagles’ team of Jannazo, Dennison, Tolbert, and Payton Hart placed seventh at 3:55.27.

Boys’ 4×400 relay — Eagles place sixth

The Eagles’ team of Buelow, Brody Hunsicker, Jones, and Gesch placed sixth at 3:18.78.

TEAM STANDINGS

Boys: Niceville, first, 88 points; Choctaw, tied for 14th, 10 points; Fort Walton Beach, tied for 22nd, 1 point; Crestview, 0 points.

Girls: Niceville, second, 64 points; Choctaw, tied for 30th, 1 point; Fort Walton Beach, 0 points; Crestview, 0 points.
