Okaloosa County School District renews Purple Star designation for supporting military families

All district schools were recognized for a second time as Florida Purple Star Schools of Distinction, making Okaloosa County one of only five districts statewide to earn top-tier status.

The Okaloosa County School District announced last Wednesday that all district schools have renewed their status as Florida Purple Star Schools of Distinction for their commitment to helping military-connected students navigate transitions and achieve success in their education.

  • The district also maintained its designation as a Florida Purple Star District of Distinction, one of only five school districts in the state to earn this honor. With one of the largest populations of military-connected students in Florida, the district serves families connected to Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field and Duke Field.

“With some of the strongest ties to our nation’s military installations, including Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, and Duke Field, this recognition holds special meaning for Okaloosa County,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “Our educators, staff, and community partners take pride in serving military-connected students. We are deeply committed to ensuring that every child who walks through our doors, no matter how many times they move, feels welcomed, supported, and valued. This distinction reflects that commitment and our collective gratitude to those who serve our country.”

The Florida Purple Star Schools of Distinction program was signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2021 and honors schools that provide exceptional support, resources and services to military-connected students and their families.

To qualify for district recognition, at least 75% of a district’s schools must meet the rigorous criteria required to earn the Purple Star distinction. This year, Florida Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas announced that 451 schools statewide received the Purple Star Schools of Distinction designation, including 78 new schools and 124 schools renewing their recognition. Additionally, 16 colleges within the Florida College System were recognized as Collegiate Purple Star Campuses.

Chambers said the district began following the Purple Star initiative when it was first proposed during the 2021 legislative session.

  • “Our own Representative Patt Maney was instrumental in bringing the Purple Star program to Florida, and we are thrilled to see our schools recognized for the incredible work they do to support our military children,” said Chambers.

The Purple Star designation recognizes schools that go above and beyond to provide academic excellence, social-emotional support and stability for military families.
