Water and sewer systems on Okaloosa Island are up and working, according to a water service alert Okaloosa County issued Sunday.
People on the island are asked to continue with water conservation measures.
“Infrastructure is still strained and a few critical sites are compromised,” the alert states.
Why the systems were shut off
Okaloosa County Water & Sewer announced before the storm that it would begin shutting off multiple drinking water mains and sewage lift stations on Okaloosa Island starting at noon Friday, Oct. 9.
The county said at the time that storm surge from Hurricane Isaias was forecast to be 7 to 9 feet and would cause a complete loss of the water and sewer system if it was not turned off ahead of the storm.
“Shutting these systems down early will allow the County to restore water and sewer service as soon as possible after the storm,” the county said in that announcement.
Okaloosa Island had been under a mandatory evacuation order since Oct. 8.
