Rocky Bayou makes history, Sloan shatters javelin record at 1A state track and field championships

Area athletes combined for state titles in javelin, discus and the 4 x 800 relay at the FHSAA 1A championships in Jacksonville.

Area schools made their mark at the 2026 FHSAA 1A Track and Field State Championships on Wednesday at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida.

Rocky Bayou and Baker all came home with hardware, highlighted by a record-breaking javelin performance and a historic relay victory.

Boys’ javelin

Baker junior Will Sloan delivered the top individual performance of the day for area athletes, winning the state title in the javelin with a throw of 204 feet, 9 inches — shattering the previous state record of 193 feet. Teammate Declan Crawford also competed, finishing 14th at 144 feet, 8 inches.

Girls’ discus throw

Paxton sent a strong duo to the discus, and both delivered. Eden Heil won the state title for the Lady Bobcats with a throw of 126 feet, while teammate Johanna Leddon finished fourth at 112 feet, 3 inches. Baker’s Katarina Price placed sixth with a mark of 109 feet, 9 inches.

Girls’ shot put

Laurel Hill senior Aiyana Dixon finished 10th in the girls’ shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 8.5 inches, roughly 8 feet behind state champion Justice Lee of Marathon.

Girls’ 4 x 800 relay

In what has already been a banner year for Rocky Bayou athletics, the Lady Knights added another milestone. The 4 x 800 relay team of Karissa Rossell, Selah Gayle, Kayla Keener and Ruth Alldredge became the first relay team in school history to win a state title, finishing in 9:28.81 — just 4.75 seconds ahead of runner-up Providence School.

Boys’ 4 x 800 relay

Rocky Bayou’s boys’ 4 x 800 relay team of Dominic Ferguson, Mark Harlan, Sawyer Swan and Evan Tomaschko finished fourth in 8:10.25 in a tight race. The Knights finished about 11 seconds behind first-place Providence, two seconds behind second-place Oak Hall and roughly a second behind third-place Holy Trinity in a neck-and-neck battle for the podium.

Girls’ 4 x 400 relay

The Lady Knights’ 4 x 400 relay team of Skylah Gherdovich, Delainey Baker, Keener and Gayle placed third in 4:00.01, four seconds behind runner-up Benjamin and five seconds behind first-place Admiral Farragut.

Girls’ 400-meter hurdles

Rocky Bayou had two qualifiers in the 400-meter hurdles. Gayle finished fourth in 1:04.51, just four seconds behind Keymani Dillingham’s record-breaking first-place finish, while teammate Baker placed eighth in 1:05.95.

Girls’ 100-meter hurdles

Gayle added a 15th-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.97 seconds.

Girls’ 400-meter dash

Keener also qualified individually for state in the 400-meter dash, finishing 12th in 1:00.68.

Girls’ 800-meter run

Alldredge, a member of the state championship relay team, also competed in the 800-meter run, finishing 14th in 2:25.50.

Boys’ 400-meter hurdles

Baker senior Michael Richards finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.31 seconds, four seconds behind state champion Julian Luiz of Benjamin School.

Boys’ 1,600-meter run

Ferguson qualified individually for the 1,600-meter run, finishing 12th in 4:38.88.

Boys’ 800-meter run

Harlan also qualified for the 800-meter run, finishing 16th in 2:06.80.

Boys’ 3,200-meter run

Ferguson also competed in the 3,200-meter run, finishing 16th in 10:16.77.

Team standings (area schools)

Boys: Baker, tied for 15th (21 points); Rocky Bayou, tied for 21st (5 points).

Girls: Rocky Bayou, tied for ninth (22 points); Paxton, tied for 14th (15 points); Baker, tied for 25th (3 points); Laurel Hill (0 points).
