Destin voters have chosen five new members for their city council, with incumbent Dewey Destin leading the field by securing 22.98% of the vote in Tuesday’s election.

  • The other successful candidates include incumbent Kevin Schmidt with 15.14%, incumbent Teresa Hebert at 13.84%, former city council-woman Sandy Trammell at 13.31%, and former council member Rodney Braden at 12.86%.

Under the city’s at-large voting system, the top four vote-getters will serve full four-year terms, while the fifth-place finisher, Braden, will complete a partial two-year term. The partial term resulted from a resignation in January 2024.

The election filled seats previously held by the incumbents and an appointed position held by John Stephens, who had temporarily filled the vacancy created by Matthew Sweetser’s resignation earlier this year.

According to city charter provisions, the candidate elected to the partial term would be eligible to serve one additional four-year term afterward.
