Northwest Florida State College contributes $283.1 million to the regional economy each year and supports nearly 4,000 jobs across Okaloosa and Walton counties, according to a newly released economic impact report.

  • The report found that for every $1 invested in NWFSC, students gain $6.50 in lifetime earnings. One out of every 58 jobs in the two-county area is supported by the activities of the college and its students.

“Our mission is not only to educate students, but to empower them to impact communities,” said NWFSC President Mel Ponder. “These numbers tell a powerful story: when students succeed, our entire region benefits.”

The college’s operational spending generates $34.9 million in added income and supports 982 jobs through college-related activities. Student spending contributes an additional $3.3 million in added income to local businesses.

Alumni account for the largest share of the impact, contributing $237.7 million annually in added income to the regional economy through increased earning power and workforce participation.

“This is transformation in action,” said Rhea Goff, chair of the NWFSC Board of Trustees. “Our graduates are fueling local businesses, filling critical workforce needs, and building stronger futures for themselves and their families.”

The report shows 83% of students remain in the college’s service area after completing their education, while 91% stay in Florida.

  • “Our graduates don’t just leave with a diploma — they stay, lead, and serve,” Ponder said. “Northwest Florida State College is where transformation begins — for individuals and for our communities.”

The report also details earning potential by education level. Workers with only a high school diploma earn an average of $37,100 annually, while those with a certificate earn $40,300. An associate degree raises that figure to $44,600, and a bachelor’s degree — which NWFSC now offers in select fields — commands average earnings of $64,900.

“At Northwest Florida State College, we are transforming lives every day,” Ponder said. “When students achieve their goals, our entire region grows stronger. That is the true return on investment in education.”
